2011 BWFF Best Documentary. Stand-up comedy in the Middle East? A group of comics led by Egyptian-American comedian Ahmed Ahmed sets out to show it can be done, performing gigs from cosmopolitan Dubai (where, cosmopolitan or not, Ahmed Ahmed has just been reinstated from a ban after his last performance there) and Beirut to Riyadh and Cairo. While not all forms of comedy may be universal, the group proves that humor can be a powerful tool in reaching across cultural chasms and showing the common humanity in us all. The movie features Whitney Cummings, whose NBC sitcom debuted September 22.
Film Editor Benedict Kasulis, an Ashland native, will be a Featured Fimaker at this year's BWFF, and will be here for the weekend to talk about the making of Just Like Us, film editing, and anything else that fans and filmmakers want to ask him.
